The upper four tiers are round with plain white icing and a simple ribbon, while the base tier is an octagon shape decorated with ivy sugar work and the couple's initials in a gold cursive script.

Traditionally, a royal wedding cake is a rich fruit sponge, but Jack and Eugenie chose a very modern—and US-influenced—red velvet wedding cake.

They're not alone in breaking from tradition: Harry and Meghan chose a lemon-elderflower cake made by Claire Ptak of London’s Violet Bakery. Ptak used syrup made from the elderflower trees on the Queen’s Sandringham estate, and decorated the three cakes with buttercream and fresh flowers.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge meanwhile chose baker Fiona Cairns to craft theirs in 2011, which was decorated with white icing and intricate sugar flowers. The couple also reportedly commissioned a second cake based on one of William's favorites, a chocolate Tiffin.

The Palace has described the cake as "traditional... with a modern feel,” and revealed that Cabot's name was suggested by Eugenie's father, the Duke of York. Cabot had been involved in the Duke of York’s Pitch@Palace program, for which she provided biscuits.

Cabot, who was a costume designer prior to her career as a baker, was honored to have been asked. "I am incredibly excited to be given this wonderful opportunity to create such a special and unique cake," she said in a press release. "It has been lovely working with Princess Eugenie and Jack and I really hope they enjoy the cake on the day."
