Where is it? On the Thai island of Koh Samet, Paradee Resort and Spa is a three-hour trip by car and ferry from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport. Limousine transfers from the arrivals hall can be arranged.
What's the ambience like? Accommodation at Paradee is a far cry from the rustic huts for which Koh Samet is better known and which Paradee replaced. DVD players, Italian coffee machines and Wi-fi broadband are standard in the 40 thatched-roof villas, most of which have private swimming pools a few sandy steps from the sea. The spa offers rejuvenation treatments for body and soul while fidgety fitness fanatics can busy themselves in the gym or the expansive infinity pool.
What else is there to do? The road between Ao Kiu beach, where Paradee is located, and the rest of the island is poorly maintained, so the focus is on aquatic activities. Guests enjoy the complimentary use of windsurfers, kayaks and a sailboat. Scuba-diving and speedboat tours can be arranged.
What's on the menu? Fresh ingredients are ferried in daily or caught in the crystal-clear waters offshore. Instead of bland tourist versions of Thai dishes, chef Wanchai Chatchotinan serves tastebud-tingling regional fare as well as international favourites. The barbecued red snapper packs a piquant punch and even the ubiquitous Pad Thai receives an imaginative reworking.
Who should visit? The property is designed as a couples' resort and is not suitable for small children. Honeymooners appreciate the discreet attention of staff; for those tempted to tie the knot, Buddhist and western wedding services are conducted at the resort.
Anything else we should know? Paradee is the only resort in Thailand with beaches facing east and west. Watch the sunrise from your patio and head over to the sunset bar in the evening for cocktails.
What's the bottom line? Old Samet hands will shudder at nightly rates starting at 15,000 baht (HK$4,000) a room and soaring to 80,000 baht for a suite perched above the lapping waves. Compulsory speedboat transfers to the island are also steep, at 6,000 baht. But potential guests should look for the special package rates regularly posted on the resort website.
