A fire inside the transformer plant at Howard Industries sent Laurel firefighters to the scene just before midnight last Friday, Chief Leo Brown of the Laurel Fire Department reported.

Three engines under the command of Battalion Chief Tommy Ferguson were dispatched to the plant in the industrial park at 11:30 p.m. The fire was found in the oven area of the plant and firefighters “performed an aggressive attack and brought the fire under control in about two hours,” Brown said.

One employee suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to South Central Regional Medical Center and some fire personnel were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, Brown said.

The cause was believed to be a leaking tank that was under high heat after being painted, Brown said, noting that all units were back in service by 2 a.m. Saturday.

“We were back to normal operations in the area of the fire by Monday morning,” said Karly McCoy of HI.

It was the third fire there in less than a year — one in August and one in April.
