I’ve been on a shampoo kick — as in, the trusty shampoo I used for years kinda, sorta stopped working for my fine, thin hair. It’s normal, according to experts. "Our hair texture often changes the older we get due to hormones or diet," salon trichologist, Penny James, shared with InStyle. "A shampoo that used to make your hair look amazing five years ago is not going to do its job anymore. It's time to make a change." The solution? Change your shampoo every few years — and said every “few” years rolled around when I was least expecting it.
I wanted to make my go-to, organic shampoo work for me because it’s made with gentle ingredients; it was easy on my hair, which is very fine and prone to breakage if not handled properly. It’s formula was perfect for me — until it wasn’t, and TBH, I was a bit frustrated. My hair started to look limp, flat, dry, and just plain meh. I didn’t know what to do — so I decided to change the shampoo I was using (which is a big deal for me, considering I don’t do well with change!) and finally try the Biolage Volume Bloom line I had read so many rave reviews about. Shoppers on Amazon wrote they were “in shock” after using the shampoo because they’re hair was so voluminous. I had my doubts, but then I tried it, and can attest that, too, was in utter shock post-showering.

The Biolage shampoo, which averages a 4.7-star rating on Amazon, is obviously one that delivers volume — hence the name, volume bloom (which, I always misread as boom, because that’s how powerful I feel post-lathering). It’s made with fine hair in mind, delivering a thorough cleanse while also adding volume and shine without weighing it down; it plumps the individual strands, which I noticed the second my hair started to air dry, while also lifting at the roots, which is where ample volume is most noticeable. As a cherry on top, the vegan shampoo, which is paraben-free, is also dermatologist-approved. New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick shared with InStyle the shampoo’s formula, which includes glycerin, “helps to add moisture without weighing down the hair and provides a gentle-yet-effective cleanse.”
Using the Biolage shampoo was the most pleasant experience from start to finish. It lathered so nicely, and you only need a little bit to go a long way. What’s more, it smells heavenly — in fact, the second I applied it to my scalp, it brought me back to a time when I got my hair washed at a salon. The hairstylist used this shampoo on me, too, and we all know how powerful our senses are to bring us back to moments in time. Ahh. Once I got out of the shower, I could already tell me hair was less tangled than usual and more manageable.
Fun fact: I don’t brush my hair when it's wet. I simply zhuzh it from root to tip with my hands and let it air dry; once it's mostly dry, I’ll gently run my wooden brush from root to tip; then, I continue to let it air dry. I rarely, if ever, use heat on it, which makes what I’m about to say all the more jaw-dropping: The volume post drying made it look like I had just received a salon-quality blowout. Frizz was tamed, strands were shiny, and the roots were lifted. Wow!
I now fully understand all the rave Amazon reviews. One shopper wrote, “My hair has never looked so full and so soft at the same time. I have very fine hair,” to which I say, same! Another said, “this has given me more ‘body' than anything else at five times the price!”
If you have fine, thin hair like me, or simply are on the hunt for a new shampoo to switch up your shower routine, I highly recommend you give the Biolage Volume Bloom collection a go. Your hair will thank you for it.
