On Saturday, in county courthouses and other public facilities across Southeast Mississippi, local Democrats will gather for their county Democratic conventions — a quadrennial ritual that traces its roots back 200 years to the nomination of Andrew Jackson for president in 1824.
In Jones County, the meeting will be at the courthouse in Laurel. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. and the convention will convene at 10.
“We are calling all interested Democrats to meet us,” said Rickey Cole, chairman of the state’s 4th Congressional District Democratic executive committee. “We shall discuss issues for inclusion in our state and national party platforms, elect our county party leaders for the next four years and hear from the candidates we have nominated to serve us in public office.
“All Democratic Party supporters are welcome and encouraged to participate.”
