The singer was born on 21st April 1988 in Miami, Florida, United States. His parents are Lisette Canela (mother) and Heriberto Canela (father). Jencarlos has three siblings, Jason Canela, Erick and, Annette Canela.
One of his brothers (Jason Canela) is a talented American actor of Cuban descent. He is famous for his appearance in various telenovelas such as ¿Dónde Está Elisa? SoBe Real and Cosita Linda.
While growing up, Canela refused to follow in his father's military footsteps. Instead, he joined Disney Channel to pursue his dream of becoming a Cuban Disney singer.

Apart from singing, Jencarlos is a talented actor. He made his acting debut in 2007 starring Alfredo Torres in the telenovela, Pecados Ajenos. He collaborated with Dominican singer Cristal Marie in creating the shows' theme song.
He made his debut as a theatre actor in 2008 in the critically acclaimed stage musical Miami Libre at the Arsht Center. Jencarlos acted, danced, and performed songs in Miami Libre, which was done in English and Spanish.
